Planning for Death

Event hosted by the University of Arizona’s Arizona State Museum.

A discussion between Sarah Ascher with AZEOLCP and Carla Sutter with Contexture/the AzHDR. These leading national experts and thought-leaders will walk viewers through the process of completing advance directives, discuss end-of-life care work and policy in Arizona and reflect on the many ways AZEOLCP is “fundamentally changing the way we talk about and plan for death.” Understanding one’s cultural and family values is imperative when reflecting and thinking about what one might want in advance directives and how to discuss these desires with family members and the medical caregivers.

Sarah Ascher, Associate Vice President for the Arizona End of Life Care Partnership (EOLCP) at United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona. The AZEOLCP includes 18 Grantee Partner organizations; 29 Investing Partners; a core infrastructure team, and over 350 stakeholders. She leads the AZEOLCP in its mission to enhance the way we live by fundamentally changing the way we talk about death and its vision is to ensure people receive the care they desire at the end of their lives. It is now a model of collaboration and impact. Sarah is passionate about bridging the worlds of healthcare and community.

Carla Sutter, MSW, Director, Arizona Healthcare Directives Registry (AzHDR) for Contexture. She has 30 years’ experience working with organizations who are dedicated to helping clients and families care for themselves and others whose needs are changing due to age or illness.

This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibit, Walking Each Other Home: Cultural Practices at End of Life, on display now at ASM through Feb. 25, 2023.
